Wednesday, October 5, 2011Classroom Vocabulary
Tried to follow this lesson: http://lan195.blogspot.com/2011/09/pinyin-foundation.html

First part seemed to review the 4 tones in Chinese.

Near the bottom, there was a vocabulary list of 10 phrases commonly heard in a classroom.

1. 下午好! Good afternoon! Xiàwǔ hǎo!
2. 大 家 好 ! Hello everybody! Dàjiā hǎo!
3. 同 學 好! Hello students! Tóngxué hǎo!
4. 老師 好! Hello teacher! Lǎoshī hǎo!
5. 請跟我唸 (課文) Please repeat after me (the text) Qǐng gēn wǒ niàn (kèwén)
6. 謝謝 Thanks! Xièxiè
7. 懂了嗎? Do you understand? Dǒngle ma?
8. 不懂 Don't understand. Bù dǒng
9. 請打開書。 Please open your book. Qǐng dǎkāi shū.
10. 再見 Goodbye! Zàijiàn
-----
I had a lot of difficulty with #5.
niàn shows up as meaning "study"
kèwén means "text". (literally "class words")

-----
Very useful website for seeing the proper stroke order for writing characters:
http://stroke-order.learningweb.moe.edu.tw/characterQueryResult.do?word=%E5%A4%A7
The above link has the stroke order for 大
To see other characters, just modify the URL and paste in whichever character you want to see.

Pinyin Foundation is a tool used by native Chinese speakers in Mainland China to learn the sounds of Chinese, or to look up unknown characters in dictionaries.

It uses the 26 letters of the Latin alpjabet to represent the sounds of Chinese.
Many of the letters are pronounced in a similar way to their English pronunciation, but not all of them. Some are, in fact, pronounced quite differently from what an English speaker might expect.

However, it is very important to imitate your instructors and recordings of native speakers so that you learn standard Mandarin pronunciation.
